Hiking the Gem Lake Trail

Hiking the Gem Lake Trail

Land of Liberty Explorers

Overview

This 3.5 mile trail leads to impressive views of Estes Park and Long’s Peak, then meanders through cool rock formations on the way to Gem Lake. The trail is rated moderate because of several steep sections near Gem Lake.

Finding the Trailhead

The trail begins at the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead. From Estes Park, take MacGregor Avenue north. MacGregor Avenue turns into Devils Gulch Road. Continue for about 1.2 miles on Devils Gulch Road, then turn onto Lumpy Ridge Drive, which leads to the parking lot.

Hiking to Gem Lake

The trail begins in a boulder field at the base of Lumpy Ridge. Interesting wildflowers line the trail as it passes through the boulder field. This section of trail is technically part of the MacGregor Ranch, established in 1873 by Alexander and Clara MacGregor. The national park purchased a conservation easement for this parcel of land in 1983 to prevent development in this area.

At .5 miles along the trail, hikers reach the junction for Black Canyon Trail. Stay right to continue to Gem Lake. Aspen trees line this section of trail – making it a favorite hike in Fall.

Aspens line the Gem Lake Trail

As the trail continues to climb, be sure to look back for awesome views, first toward Long’s Peak then Estes Park.

Next the trail drops into a canyon filled with interesting rock formations – the most notable of which is Paul Bunyan’s Boot.

From here, the trail gets steeper and ascends a series of switchbacks on the way to Gem Lake. Gem Lake is unique in Rocky Mountain National Park in that it has no inlet or outlet and is formed only by collection of snowmelt and rain water.

Gem Lake

A relentless chipmunk, who was intent on acquiring snacks from our backpack, greeted us when we arrived at Gem Lake. Remember it is illegal to feed wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park no matter how cute or determined they are!

Please sir, can I have your granola bar?
